Protection Around The World With Home Insurance

By Sharon Vanderbin

The world seems to be getting smaller through globalization, and people are travelling on business or for personal reasons more and more. There are added benefits to some home insurance policies that will offer coverage in other countries, and many policy holders are not well informed about this.

So you're going on vacation. Snowbirds are people who spend their winters in a warmer climate. What about all the stuff you're taking with you - luggage, camera, golf clubs? If there is a theft or damages to your personal property on a trip, does home insurance offer any protection? Travel insurance costs can go up when someone pays for baggage coverage, so look into whether your home insurance policy will cover you before choosing that option. This can be a cheaper option, and may also provide coverage if, say, your handbag is lost or stolen in your country of origin.

Most home insurance policies provide coverage for personal property temporarily removed from your principal residence. If you cause damage to someone else's property or cause them personal injury in another country, there is a good chance that your home insurance policy covers the cost of the damages.

Typical times that your home insurance would cover loss or damages:

You find yourself in the mountains in Switzerland, and your camera goes tumbling off the cliff just as you line up for the perfect photo. Protected or not? After the deductible is paid, the camera will be replaced if you have comprehensive home insurance, even if you are halfway across the world when you lose it.

If you are careless when carrying your surfboard on your Hawaii trip, you could cause another person on the beach a serious injury. Covered or not covered? Your home insurance policy has liability insurance included as part of it, and this would provide protection to you if you caused another person personal injury in another country, and are held liable for their injuries.

It's the end of your best day of your golf trip. And decide to go have a few drinks in the club with your fellow players. When you exit the clubhouse, your golf clubs are nowhere to be found. Covered or not covered? Your policy protects your personal items worldwide, so they will go over your claim. Sporting goods such as golf clubs may not be fully covered, so be sure to check your policy closely. Be sure to ask your insurance provider to increase your insurance coverage in case of an event like this.

Your family is enjoying a California coast trip in your recreational vehicle. You are out for the day on a hike, and return to find that your laptop, and your TV and entertainment unit have been stolen from the RV itself. Will these be protected by insurance? Since your laptop was only temporarily taken out of the home, your home insurance policy will most likely provide protection here. Items attached to the RV such as your flat screen will be covered by the vehicle's insurance policy, not your home insurance.

As you are away on a holiday, knowing that you have some protection for your property from your home insurance is a comforting thought.
