By James Stewart

Setting up a business on your own is an exciting time. Having the freedom to not have a boss watching over you can be exhilarating. But, before you get carried away with your dream it is important to choose a business model that will work. People need to wash clothes and large items and that won't change, so loans for laundromats can set you on your way to owning your very own business.

A laundromat is a safe business idea and obtaining finance is very much the same as it is for any new business idea. Make sure you borrow from a reputable bank or other source, avoiding high interest rates. Lending is always available to those with a bad credit score. You just need to do a little but more homework.

So, step by step. In order to know how much money you will need to borrow to open your laundromat, you will need a business plan. You will need to work out what the initial setup costs will be. These will include the purchase or rental of machinery, bills, fees, and other overheads that any new business would incur.

Now you have a figure in your read you will be able to work out along with your bank or other lender what your monthly repayments will be. Never borrow more money than you can comfortably repay. To work out if you can meet the repayments you must look at how much money you hope to make each month. This is called your profit and loss, and for your laundromat will include utility bills, rental, equipment, your profit coming from your customers who pay for your services.

So, why should you choose a laundry as a business idea instead of a store or a small food outlet, or indeed any other business type. Well, there are many reasons. First and foremost, everyone washes clothes and this will never change. People do have machines in their own homes, but not for large items. Also, many busy people like a service wash.

But before you go ahead with your plans you do need to study the local area. If there are already similar businesses, you may have to think of a different location or business idea. If you really want to stick to a laundromat then you will have to decide on an additional service that no competitors are offering to be assured a successful outcome.

The area you choose for your new business is very important. Although low rental is attractive, there are many other factors to consider. If you rent in a street that is not prominent, then you will have to consider how to advertise your services such as through social media.

The perfect place to open a laundry is somewhere where they are not just residents but also a passing trade of visitors. People on holiday won't have access to machines, and a service for washing and drying items will be very popular. Also make sure that your machines are big enough for items that cannot be washed at home. Lastly, make connections with local businesses too and try to pull in some commercial contractors.
