Managing Long Distance Relationships While In The Service

By Jim Thorpe

When my grandfather was in the Air Force, he was required to travel and move with his family frequently. My mom lived in a different state for every year of her high school education, and still my grandfather had to travel even more.

Waking up early, not only do you wake up early in the military, but you are supposed to get ready fast! Morning is one of the most productive times in the military and they really try to keep it that way every day.

You will find that at times it is even chaotic but it is something that can be a huge asset when you get back to the civilian world. There are hundreds of people just sleeping away their morning hours. If you are one of the few and the proud morning people, you have a step ahead of the competition and you are going to be on time for more things.

Exercise for life! If you were in the military for a while, you know as well as anyone else that your body can take a lot more than we give it credit for. Having the confidence to keep going when you are tired and feel like you can't do more is exactly what most military training programs give you.

Military bearing , this is something that most people just don't understand. Military bearing is what people have when they are able to control their emotions and stand with confidence. This can be used on a daily bases in order to control the stress level and help other people calm down and make sound decisions.

Initiative, Military training requires a lot of initiative. Many times you will find yourself in the position of having to improvise and make decisions quickly.

Overseas communications can be expensive thus making calling and texting difficult, if it is not already impossible. However in some cases if you and your significant other both have smart phones you are able to download applications such as Kakao Talk that allow you to communicate for free.

Organization, Whether it is scheduling out your time or setting up your appointments and making sure that you are there on time every time, military training teaches you to be organized and prompt.

This is useful wherever you are at in life. Promptness and organization are the hallmarks of a professional and if you really want to succeed at things that is exactly where you need to focus.

With all of these things you learn in the military, you can expect a major impact on your life. You may have your va home loan that you are staying up on religiously, or your job that you are just succeeding at, or you might just have the confidence you need to make it ahead, whatever it is, you can thank your military training to helping you get there.
