In order to earn said credentials, I believe one of the best first steps to take is earning an internship of some kind. Experience can be earned from interning and I feel like I have enough of it under my belt to speak of it. You may be able to pick up on things as you listen to your professor go on about his or her lecture but how much are you actually learning? You may not be able to let these aspects seep in unless you're actively working. You have to be able to get out of the classroom and into the working world so that you can have a taste of what the working world is about.
Of course, who's to say that these oftentimes unpaid spots cannot lead to something better down the road? I've seen many cases of individuals working hard in these spots before ultimately being offered part-time or full-time spots in the company. This goes to show just how substantial the work done can become in the future. If you're unafraid of putting forth the best efforts imaginable, you may just benefit in the same way, provided that you believe what you're working toward is what you want.
