How To Detect Counterfeit Bills

By Jason McDonald

To say that counterfeit money is a problem would be an understatement, and it has been occurring for many years. This is a problem that impacts anyone that deals with money, even if they aren't financially savvy, which means that knowing how to detect fake bills is vital. How can you know if a bill that you've been handed isn't legitimate? Here are a few ways that you can do so, courtesy of Robert Jain.

There are many ways to detect counterfeit bills, but let's start with the printing. As names such as Bob Jain will tell you, authentic dollar bills have raised printing, which you will be able to detect when you run your finger across the ink. The rougher the ink in question feels to the touch, the more likely it is that said bill is legitimate. Otherwise, you may have been given a false bill without realizing it.

Next, check to see if your currency has a watermark printed on it. One of the most unique aspects of the watermark in question is that it can only be seen when the bill is held up to the light. It's also located on the right side of the bill and matches the individual printed on it beforehand. For those that are overly cautious about the legitimacy of the currency they've been handed, this is another great tip to make note of.

You can also detect a counterfeit bill by the absence of a security thread. To expand on this, if you have a number of $20 bills in your wallet, there's a good chance that you've seen a thick line located on the left of each one. Needless to say, this is what's known as a security thread, and it's designed with the purpose of ensuring the legitimacy of the currency in question. Anyone that specializes in finance will tell you the same.

These are just a few ways to know how to detect a counterfeit bill, no matter where you shop, live, or what have you. Anyone can become the owner of counterfeit money without realizing it, so it pays to be knowledgeable. With enough information in mind, you will be able to detect false bills and pass them along to the proper authorities. Even if you only detect a false bill here and there, understand that it will make a difference.
