Texas Hill Country: Some Interesting Information

Hundreds of thousands of travelers visit Texas Hill Country each year, and it is easy to understand why they make this trek. The region, which includes about 25 Texas counties, offers spectacular scenery, quaint historic towns and much to see and do. If you are planning a trip or a move to Texas Hill Country, here are a few facts to know.

The geography of Texas Hill Country is quite unique and there is just no other place in Texas quite like it. The region is a large, hilly plateau marked with several prominent granite domes, such as Enchanted Rock, which is a popular tourist attraction. The rock is located in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and visitors can camp, hike, rock climb or just enjoy a picnic. The area features an abundance of interesting flora and fauna, as well.

If you are interested in caverns, then Hill Country is an excellent place to visit. You can check out Natural Bridge Caverns which offers lots of tours and other activities. Cave Without A Name also is popular and near the town of Boerne. This cave is a National Natural Landmark. In Georgetown, you can visit Inner Space Cavern and there are several other caverns and caves in Hill Country.

There are more than 50 lavender farms in Texas and many of them are located in Texas Hill Country. The Texas Lavender Association headquarters is located in the Hill Country town of Johnson City. There are two annual lavender festivals in this region, as well, including the Blanco Lavender Festival and the Becker Vineyards Lavender Fest. Both events include a variety of activities and vendors selling lavender and many products made from lavender.

Hill Country also is well known as an excellent wine growing region. You might be surprised to learn that Texas was actually the first state in the U.S. to begin growing grapevines for wine production. In fact, Franciscan monks began growing grapes in Texas more than 100 years before vineyards were created in California. In Texas Hill Country, there are nearly 40 wineries and most are open for tastings, tours and other special events.
