Fredericksburg: Moving To This Historic Texas Town

By Pammy McGrath

There are many reasons why people relocate to Texas. This is a state with top schools, low taxes and a myriad of activities to please any interest. If you are planning to relocate to the Lone Star State, there are certainly many great cities to think about, but if you are looking for some old-fashioned country charm, there are few better places to consider than the historic Hill Country town of Fredericksburg.

While Fredericksburg is definitely a small town, with just over 10,500 inhabitants, this hamlet is quite close to two of the state's most popular cities - Austin and San Antonio. The state capitol of Austin is about 68 miles away from Fredericksburg, while San Antonio is very slightly closer, just about 63 miles down the road.

If you aren't a huge fan of cold weather and snow, you will be pleased to note that the temperature rarely dips below freezing in this part of the state, which is known as Texas Hill Country. Winter temperatures typically range from highs of about 65 degrees with lows in the high 30s. Summers can be quite hot, with the highest temperatures in July and August.

There is much to see and do in Fredericksburg, and the town is quite popular for tourists. The downtown area is actually listed in the National Register of Historic Places and features an abundance of interesting architecture as well as antique shops, specialty stores, cafes and restaurants. Visiting local wineries is also quite popular with tourists, and you can even visit a distillery that produces whiskey or a brew house that produces several lagers, a hefe-weizen, an IPA and a premium pilsner brew. Oktoberfest is one of the most popular annual occasions, a huge celebration of the German culture so prevalent in Fredericksburg.

If you love history, particularly military history, there are several local options for you to enjoy. Fort Martin Scott Historic Site is run by the city of Fredericksburg, and tours are available every day except for Monday. Chester W. Nimitz was a Fredericksburg native son who eventually led the entire Pacific Fleet in battle during World War II. The Admiral Nimitz Museum is located in Fredericksburg inside the National Museum of the Pacific War.
