By Jerish Thieman

There is much concern today regarding pollution and the depletion of natural resources. Many of us have tried to reduce our water use, drive more fuel-efficient cars, installed solar panels or found other ways to diminish our dependence and need for natural resources. For a few brave individuals, they have chosen to completely remove themselves from the grid, no longer needing local water or power to maintain their lifestyle.

People make the move to go off grid for a variety of reasons. Many people are simply conservationists who see the droughts and strain on the power grids and wish to remove themselves from the mix, living a more natural life. Some people love the idea of being completely self-sufficient and having the confidence that comes from knowing that you don't have to depend on others for your food, water and power.

Still others are preparing for the possible collapse of our nation's economy or the horrific effects of different natural disasters or a pandemic plague.
