Hear the Sounds of the Whales with Your Personal Checks

By Alan Plastin

Does the sight of fabulous, enchanting whales in the wild make you shiver with excitement? Are you bewitched by the stories of these immense mammals and the stories that have existed about them through history? Their legends are found in everything from folktales to the Bible and now you can convey your love of whales to your personal checks, too.

Although they come in all shapes and sizes, the blue whale is the biggest. Weighing as much as 180 long tons and 98 feet long, he is the largest mammal to have existed. Whales are discovered all over the planet and found in every ocean. For a long time, they have been used for their whole body, from their meat to their bones. Indeed, they were used so much that by the middle of the 20th century, industrial whaling left some of the species endangered. Just a few countries practice whaling these days.

Whales are related to the Indohyus, an extinct ungulate who was semi-aquatic and deer-like. Whales split from these creatures around 54 million years ago. Today, whales are warm-blooded mammals that breathe air and have body hair. They can also feed their young milk from mammary glands. The blubber beneath their skin stores their energy and acts as insulation.

Their blowholes are most likely their most recognized feature, though. These are very important and, in fact, Baleen whales have two. These are located on their heads and permit them to breathe even when the rest of their body is underwater.

Although whales cannot be tamed or made into pets like other mammals, they do have human-like moods. Whales can grieve, instruct their young, learn new things, and even plot amongst themselves. As captured creatures, they have even tried to imitate human speech as a form of communication. Over the course of history, they have been a part of folklore, legends, and even Bible stories. "Moby Dick", of course, is a classic piece of literature about a whale.
