Elements To Note In Disaster Damage Assessment

By Gregory Fox

A disaster is a sudden accident that causes a big damage and loss of life. Disaster management assessment is the process of determining the site, nature, and how severe the destruction sustained by the property is. The Importance of this exercise is to determine the degree of the adversity, the number of homes as well as businesses affected, and determine if the local resources will be sufficient in responding and recovering from the tragedy. The following are factors to be considered in disaster damage assessment.

The degree of destruction is an aspect to note down. Each ruin causes a different amount of loss depending on the severity, for example, losses incurred by fires are different from those of a road accident. One considers the number of property destroyed if the destruction is major, minor, or completely unrecognizable. This shows if the building can still be inhabited or not depending on how far the building has been damaged.

Secondly, the location of tragedy is marked and identified. The expert defines the location where the adversity has occurred and lists the property and people that have been destroyed. This guides in the determination of the number of dead people, buildings ruined, and the effect of the tragedy that has on the environment. It also identifies things that need mere repairs and those that require complete replacements.

Also, the property should be evaluated to identify the insurance cover applicable to the structures and people affected. It helps to identify whether these structures were insured or not, what company was offering insurance, and the package they are offering. An individual describes if the property has ever been involved in any other tragedy and what is insurable and deductible.

The cost of the whole process should be put in mind. One needs to have the historical data of the property and people involved in the adversity to give their monetary value. The fees that will be required in doing the loss evaluation should also be considered as it will involve the use of experts and technical machines to do repairs or replacements. One should have a record of contracts made previously with the owners of property.

Public participation is also considered here. Local people will be included in the procedure when the effect of ruin affects their well-being and medical life. Lessons on how to deal with tragedy and how to prevent a repetition of the incident are offered.

Moreover, the process of debris removal is noted. This involves removal of trees, building wreckage, remains of cars, or any other automotive as well s removal of dead bodies. It helps to ensure the maintenance of public health, safety, and clean environment. This also helps the community to recover economically.

Lastly, the emergency protective measures should be put in place. This is before, during, and after the ruin so as to reduce threats to life, health, or additional damage to property. It will involve the implementation of safety measures to prevent another occurrence of tragedy like installation of fire extinguishers and lessons on what to do when faced with a disaster and what to do to avoid a repeat.
